Folks,
I made a fun gun buy at the Dale City VFW gun show yesterday - a nice old Savage M720 (licensed Browning A5) that I would like to know a few things about.
No pics yet, but it is plain Jane blue, no flaming bombs or such, just a poly-choked barrel that was 'beheaded' at some point. Serial number is 42995.
The barrel also is serialed 42995.
Being as Savage made these from about 1930-1949 that I have read, any clue as to whether this serial number can be 'decoded' to determine this shotty's birthday?

Savage Model 720 Barrels

Ruger does not necessarily produce firearms in serial number order. There are occasions when blocks of serial numbers have been manufactured out of sequence, sometimes years later. Also, within a model family the same serial number prefix may be used to produce a variety of different models, all in the same block of serial numbers. I can say that the Savage model 720 shotgun was made from 1930-1949.With the serial number provided,I would think that it was made sometime in the 1930,s with that low of a se rial number.

  • Savage M720 Recently acquired a Savage 720 12ga purported to be from WWII; 20' barrel, serial number stamped on bottom of receiver is 78258. Left side of receiver stamped 'U.S.' Next to a small 'flaming bomb' under a 'P' stamp.
  • Jul 11, 2016  Savage Model 720 Serial Number Question I am looking at what is advertised a Savage Model 720 twelve gauge shotgun. It shows as being made in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. The seller advises that it has a six digit serial number. All the information I can find on the Model 720 indicates a five digit serial number, not six.
  • OK, one more. Who knows about the Savage Model 720 semi-auto 12 ga that looks like a Browning A-Bolt. Its S/N 59281 and in mint condition. I've inherited my fathers gun collection which includes this shotgun, the Mossberg Model 485B and a Model 94 dated to 1928.
  • Nov 14, 2011 - The only numbers that I have found were on the underside of the smooth. What is information on savage model 720 semi-auto shotgun.
  • Still hope to find a collector of Savage 720 shotguns who can help determine the year of manufacture of my new/old Model 720. Serial is 42994. I did find through this and other sites that in general, this s/n should be pre-1940; but that's about all that I have found.
